Tips for Spring Cleaning your Yard!

Spring is finally here in Virginia and it is time to get back outside!  After a long winter your yard may be looking a bit drab and dreary.   Here are a few useful tips to get your yard ready for entertaining this year.

Survey your Yard – Start by taking a survey of your yard and see what needs to be done this season.  Remove debris in planting beds caused by the winter ice storms and leaves left over from the winter shed.  Prune back dead wood and trim shrubs as needed, make sure not to cut new buds.

Fertilization – Now is the time to fertilize and over seed the lawn to keep it green all summer long.  Remember to fertilize the plants and shrubs as well.  Check with your local home improvement store for the right fertilizer for your lawn.  When you are mowing your yard this time of year you want to keep your lawnmower blade high, this will help keep the weeds from germinating in your lawn.

Time to Plant – Spring is here with all the vibrant greens of the grass, shrubs and trees perking up, let’s add some color to the palate with flowers.  It is time to plant your spring perennials and annuals.  Make sure you wait until after the last hard frost before you plant, as many of these plants do not like the cold.  Pick a nice sunny day, go to your local nursery to find your favorite plants and get them in the ground.  You will add a punch of color to your landscape and enjoy flowers all season long.

Mulching – Mulching plant beds will help shrubs retain moisture and prevent weeds this summer, in addition to making the beds look good.  Mulch the plant beds to a standard two inch depth, and be careful to only lightly mulch around the plant base as too much mulch around the plant can cause disease.  To define planting beds take a spade and cut a sharp edge along the line where the bed and grass meet, clear away the cut grass and then mulch for a sharp, professional look.

Check your Sprinklers and Lawn Equipment – Check your sprinkler systems and your gardening tools.  We are about to hit high season for these items and you want them in proper working order.  It is a good time to get lawnmower blades sharpened and ready for use.

Add your new Patio, Pool, or Outdoor Kitchen – Now is the time to install the new patio, pool or outdoor kitchen you have been thinking about all winter.  With spring already here, it is time to get new hardscaping installed so that it will be ready for the summer.  Check our earlier blog for more information on outdoor rooms and patios.
